Meeting called to order by Tim Starliper at 7:00pm. 

These Meeting Minutes are UN-official until Accepted by vote of the club members.

March Meeting Minutes were approved by vote at the April meeting.

 

Treasurer Report

Balance in checking account as of February 28, 2022. $ 3,348.94

We had revenues/deposits of $97.28 from 2022 Dues renewals.

We have currently 43 members who have paid their 2022 dues. Keep in mind that the dues are now $25. The SWT website has been updated to reflect that when using the registering process. We accept checks and paypal or send checks to me at home address. Address is on the SWT website. Will be collecting dues in person at the February meeting.

To pay via the website: Login (IF you have an account, ensure you have logged in, but this is optional).  Click on "Club Events", then "Club Listing".  Scroll down until you see "Annual Dues 2022". Click to put a check mark under "Register".  Then Click "Add to Cart".  On the next page, Enter your Information if requested. Near the bottom, Ensure "Paypal" is marked.  Then enter your information.  Put a check mark in "Privacy Policy" and "By registering for this event, I accept Terms and Conditions".  Put a check mark in "I'm not a robot" Verification Code.  Complete the verification process then click on "Process Registration".  That's it!

 

 

 Upcoming Events:

  • April 9th (Saturday) -  This will be Zoom only event.  No-one at Woodcraft.  At 1:00pm Monthly Meeting.   At 2:00pm Zoom Interactive Remote Demonstration (IRD) by Chris Parker (UK) texturing with both hand and power tools and coloring afterwards.  See below.
  •  May 10th - Topic is Dust Collection.  Tim Starliper will moderate a discussion on dust collection.  If you have a dust mask you like, please bring it to the meeting.
  • June 14th - Sharpening.  We will be discussing how to sharpen and hone woodturning tools. Both HSS and carbide tools can be sharpened & honed easily with the correct technique.   Both oxide wheels and Carbide Boron Nitride (CBN) wheels will be shown and discussed..

 

Sign-up for the Chris Parker IRD.  The IRD is free to Paid up members of the Susquehanna Woodturners club.  You must have paid your 2022 dues to get the free price.  You will receive a link to the IRD via email.  The

 

Martin Stolpe brought some spruce pieces for the club.   Martin commented the wood smells like Christmas! Johne Laskowski brought in some Black Cherry and some "Tree of Heaven", Sassafras.  Bowls donated to the Forestry Conservation Association are appreciated.

There are Woodturning magazines at the Woodcraft store.  First come, first served.

Dr Bob Silverman offered to host a hands-on turning event at his shop on a Saturday during the warm weather.  There will be more discussion on this at a later date.  This is an excellent way to learn and improve your turning skills.  Nothing beats standing beside someone and having them show how turn different items, from spindles to bowls, to pens and hollow forms.
Dr Bob Silverman will be demonstrating woodturning  at the Millersburg Art Festival on July 30th.  Anyone who would like to help out or be involved, Contact Dr Bob.

 Paul Desmarais has a MT3 Oneway live center for picked up at the Bill Grumbine auction.  Note this is an MT3 not an MT2

 We had two new turners with us.   Chris Tapley, and Scott Farmer.  Welcome to both of you!

Scott talked about PTSD and how woodturning can help  people deal with the effects.

The AAW National Symposium is June 23, 24, 25, and 26th in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The Mid Atlantic Woodturning Symposium is September 23, 24, and 25th in Lancaster PA.

 Toby Bouder and his Wife will be at Millersburg Area Art Association on the square called "Synthesis of Life" April 6th to May 14th.

Tom White is looking for club members willing to demonstrate for the club.   You DO NOT have to be an expert, just willing to show what you can do.

 Show and Tell had some nice pieces of art.

 

 NEW BUSINESS:

You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  You do not have to  demonstrate yourself and demonstrations can be done remote to Woodcraft and pre-recorded .  Club may share demos with other clubs in the area. 
  • Ideas we are considering
    • Team Challenges - small group collaboration
    • A Descriptive challenge, not concrete like "Miniature, or Hard-to-use"

 AAW membership is encouraged for all members.  Membership gives you access to the entire library of AAW Journals going back to the beginning of AAW as well as insurance during club sponsored events.  To participate in Hands-ON events you must have a current AAW membership.

The Club Library is available to all members.  Items may be checked out at any time the Woodcraft store is open.  Please have one of the Woodcraft staff accompany you and please call ahead to ensure that nothing is going on in the classroom.

Mission Statement

Our goal is to spread the gospel of the art and craft of woodturning.  We do this through community events such as festivals and craft fairs; and through individual members selling their creations at craft fairs and juried art festivals.

Susquehanna Woodturners is a chapter of American Association of Woodturners.

Meeting Schedule

 

Currently Susquehanna Woodturners meets the second Tuesday of every month at the Harrisburg Woodcraft location, 3831 Union Deposit Rd (Union Square Mall), Harrisburg, PA 17111 and via ZOOM.  Members start to arrive for conversation and camaraderie at 6:00pm.  Meetings start at 7:00pm, and visitors are always welcome.
